My compelling question is: How does the use of multi-modal instruction in reading and writing motivate middle school readers? The rationale for my compelling question came from a sincere desire to watch middle schoolers become excited about reading and writing. As a veteran teacher of 15 years, it was time to glean new methods to better gain motivation in my class. Through NC State, I have become acutely aware of the importance of engaging, differentiated, motivational teaching to reach each learner in my class. The use of PBI, technology, and various methodology such as literature circles, response journals, close reading, and writing with my students this has become a reality in my classroom. It is my desire to consistently incorporate multi-modal instruction within my classroom to better reach each child. My study took place over two years with four separate classes of 6th and 7th graders. My findings are that a multi-modal instructional approach with an emphasis on student choice promotes motivation and a positive learning environment. Through various projects from ECI 546, 540, 523, 509 and 524 have enabled me to better reach each student in my class. Throughout this website, you will see illustrations of their work and my findings.
